In 2004 the General Statistics Office (GSO) successfully conducted a Viet
Nam-wide internal migration survey. The main purpose was to provide a statistical
underpinning to the migration situation in Viet Nam which would be suitable for
later analysis. Findings would serve as an empirical background to development of
policies along with the appropriate legal frameworks. By doing so, the survey and
its aftermath were intended to contribute to the construction of national and regional
socio-economic development plans, especially in rural areas, whereby the rights of
migrants would be respected and they would be assisted to integrate into society...
